James C. Brown joined Boston Private Bank & Trust Company in 1999. He is President of the Company’s Private Banking Group, operating on both coasts, including primary offices in Boston, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. Jim is a member of the Bank’s Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of subsidiary wealth management firm, Boston Private Wealth.
For more than a decade, Jim has led the Commercial Banking business at Boston Private, which includes lending activities across commercial real estate, commercial and industrial businesses, personal and professional and nonprofit services, and small business. He is also responsible for Credit Underwriting and Administration, including operational, compliance and support functions. He serves or has served as a member of the Bank’s Operating Committee, Sales & Marketing Committee, Asset & Liability Committee, Community Reinvestment Committee and he serves as Chair of the Bank’s Executive Loan Committee. In his time at Boston Private, the commercial loan portfolio has increased from $175 million to $3.75 billion. The assets of the Company, over the same period, have grown from $500 million to $8 billion.
Prior to his time at Boston Private, Jim spent eight years in Commercial Lending at State Street Bank & Trust Company. He was originally trained as a credit analyst in 1987 at Shawmut Bank. Jim holds a BS from Nichols College (1987) where he currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees. Jim earned his MBA from Boston College (1991). Jim has also served on numerous fundraising committees, including Children’s Hospital Boston and Judge Baker Children’s Center. Jim and his siblings, in honor of their late parents Bob and Heather, raise scholarship funding for their respective childhood home towns of Chelmsford and Billerica. Jim and his wife Tracy reside in Sudbury, MA, and have three grown children.
