Interview with Sarah Barnat, Founder of Barnat Development

Who are your biggest influences?
My grandmother came to the United States when she was 20 years old. She founded her own photographic processing company while raising three children on her own. My father then grew that company – Bokland Custom Visuals - through the digital revolution by innovating in a constantly changing field. Their determination, integrity and joyfulness are traits I aspire to continue as I lead my own company.
What drove you to start your company or firm?
Every real estate project is like starting a new company. I am a serial entrepreneur who thrives on putting together great teams to deliver transformative projects. Once I gained the skills and network by managing over a billion dollars of development for other companies,
I realized I could be even more effective by taking personal risk and executing on my own vision.
Here at Boston Private we understand that wealth rarely has to do with money. What is your wealth really for? Tell us a little bit about what motivates you – the Why behind your passion and Why you work so hard to achieve your goals?
To me, wealth is about providing security andsuccess for our families. Each project I undertake produces jobs and opportunity for everyone working on the team – from the architects and engineers to the tradespeople and property managers. I am motivated to achieve my professional goals not only for the security and happiness of my family, but for the families of all the people who contribute to the effort.
As a business person, what has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
Access to capital. I can have the best idea and a great team willing to do the work. But, without the financial support of others, nothing can be built. I developed the discipline to vet out all scenarios and be resourceful in solving all types of problems. Being able to effectively communicate the risks and rewards of each decision builds trust with investors and lenders like Boston Private Bank who will hopefully then be at my side for the next venture.
What are some of the things you have learned about yourself that surprised you most?
I crave the camaraderie of a great team. Sharing ideas and solving problems with talented people is energizing. When I launched my own firm, I relished the autonomy. However, I soon realized that it is the joint experience of creating something together with people I trust and respect that makes work so fulfilling.
My favorite part of the day is?
Sitting down to dinner with my family because it provides the space and time to connect with my husband and daughters. We share the trials and successes of our day and always try to focus on the positive.
