At Boston Private, we have the opportunity to partner with many diverse and talented business owners, helping them live their lives the way they want to and achieve their goals, hopes and dreams. Every single one of them has a different reason why they work so hard to achieve so much in life. We took 30 minutes with Renaud Megard, President and CEO of Nameplates for Industry, a global leader in high performing printed graphics solutions, to learn more about his biggest influences and what has driven the company's success.
1. When you were getting started, who were your biggest influences?
At the time when I was looking to open the next chapter in my life, I wanted to make a radical change. Coming from the Corporate Executive world, it was no longer my desire to prepare and deliver presentations to run teams across the world; I no longer wanted to spend 75% of my time on a plane, traveling from one city to the next. My 25 years of experience across large industries created opportunities to meet unique individuals allowing me to craft what I wanted to achieve in life.
Many people just think selfishly about their own life, not about others. I realized that, for me, it's all about the long term, what will be left after me. Being a thought leader in your own community is really inspirational.
My four kids also influenced my decision to make this radical turn in my life. My previous career choices resulted in my missing important experiences with my two oldest ones. I realized that after my second one entered college, I needed to do something different so I could enjoy my last two children while they were still at home. I am now able to spend most of my time with them and that's priceless. Realizing this before it is too late is not for everyone. I know too many parents who don't know their kids...Very sad, isn't it?
"I realized that for me, it's all about the long term, what will be left after me. Being a thought leader in your own community is really inspirational."
2. What drove you to purchase Nameplates for Industry (NFI)?
The type of business itself was not important; it was all about the people and the experience. I saw too many businesses where people were just there for the paycheck and didn't get the ultimate vision. The culture was empty as a result. Nameplates for Industry (NFI) was a stable business at the time of the purchase and I saw in it an opportunity to create a vision that people would believe in. I wanted to make a difference for the people at NFI and we are driving the necessary changes to ensure that we will be able to grow...together!
3. As a business person, what has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it
Challenges are part of the experience of leading a company. There are no major challenges that cannot be overcome. This is why I go to work every day with a big smile on my face!
I would say that the human factor is the most important challenge as everyone has very different expectations and we have to be able to manage the unknown.
4. As we get older and more accomplished, we learn a lot about ourselves and what is important. What are some of the things you learned about yourself that surprised you the most?
The most important thing I learned is that there is no such thing as time management. It is managing priorities that will make you successful. The other big learning is authenticity and connection with other leaders. Authentic leaders are very hard to find!
"There is no such thing as time management. It is managing priorities that will make you successful."
5. How would you complete this sentence: "If I could spend 30 minutes with someone inspiring it would be _____."
If I could spend 30 minutes with someone inspiring, it would be Bill and Melinda Gates. I love what they do with their foundation.
6. My favorite part of the day is _____ because _____.
My favorite part of the day is having breakfast with my kids and sending them off to school because they give me all the positive energy to be ready for anything during that day.
